Russian juniors victorious in Subway Super Series opener | Latest ...

Russia’s ice hockey juniors have thrashed the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League All-Stars to take the lead in the Subway Super Series.

Like a year ago the Quebec juniors didn’t cause much trouble for the Russians. Mikhail Varnakov’s charges were in full control of the game almost from the starting whistle to snatch the series opener 6-2.

Nail Yakupov, Mikhail Grigorenko, Maksim Shalunov and Valentin Zykov – each claimed a goal plus assist in the game, while the organizers named goalie Andrey Vasilevsky the Man of the Match.

“Vasilevsky showed what we all had expected,” the Russian Federation of Hockey’s website quotes Varnakov as saying. “He saved the team several times in the very beginning, when our opponents pushed us a little bit,” he stressed.

Despite the Russians netting six goals, Varnakov found something to criticize about the team’s offence.

“There are moments we would like not to repeat in the future. For instance, I’m not satisfied with how we converted our moments. We had five two-on-one opportunities but scored none,” he said.

As part of the Subway Super Series the Russian team will play five more games against their Canadian opposition from the country’s junior leagues. Last year the best-of-six tournament was tied at three-all.
